An Official Welcome of LightBurn 2.0

LightBurn 2.0 is here and it’s a big change. I will preface all of the following that if you are a production shop who’s income depends on LightBurn software, please test before upgrading your production computers. Major releases should always be installed on a test computer and verified against your use case. While LightBurn 2.0 has been heavily tested from a Beta and Release Candidate perspective, there are always fringe cases not caught during that testing that tend to be identified by the larger population of users. Plan and verify accordingly.

LightBurn 2.0 isn’t a routine point-upgrade from 1.7—it’s effectively a brand-new build. The team migrated from the aging Qt 5 toolkit to Qt 6, rewriting huge swaths of the UI, rendering, and device-handling code in the process. That deep framework swap unlocks features like high-DPI scaling, theme support, and faster graphics, but it also means 2.0 behaves more like a fresh install with new OS requirements than a simple patch on top of 1.7.

Besides discontinuing the Linux build, LightBurn 2.0 also raises the floor for both Windows and macOS:

macOS: The minimum jumps to macOS 11 (Big Sur). All macOS 10.x releases—Mojave, Catalina, etc.—are now out of scope, and the company has already signaled that support for macOS 11 itself will end after the 2.0 cycle, with future versions requiring macOS 12.

Windows: Only Windows 10 (build 1809) or newer is supported, so Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 are no longer eligible.

LightBurn 2.0 — headline UX upgrades

AreaWhat you’ll noticeWhy it matters (in daily use)
Fresh UI theme systemDark Mode plus System-, Classic Light-, and Classic Dark-themes. Overall interface got a subtle facelift from the jump to Qt 6.Better contrast, crisper icons, and consistent scaling on high-DPI monitors. Your workspace feels more contemporary without having to relearn layout. docs.lightburnsoftware.com
Shape creation overhaulNew quick-draw shapes (Triangles, Pentagons, Octagons, Stars, Dual Stars) live under a stacked “Draw Shapes” button. You can immediately move/scale/rotate a shape before switching tools, or auto-switch to Select mode when you’re done.Speeds up simple design tasks—no more menu-hunting or extra clicks to tweak a freshly drawn part. docs.lightburnsoftware.com
Edit Nodes toolbarActivating Node-Edit now pops a contextual toolbar with every node action in one place.Easier to discover (and remember) node shortcuts; less right-click-digging. docs.lightburnsoftware.com
Camera window redesignTabs split live‐view Capture vs. Adjust, plus sliders for Exposure, Brightness, etc. A new (Labs) calibration wizard uses AprilTags and walks you through alignment step-by-step.Far clearer for beginners; calibration is less intimidating and gives smoother overlays. docs.lightburnsoftware.com
Stacked buttons & smarter context menusBoolean operations and basic shapes each compress into a single dropdown button. Cuts/Layers window gets right-click context menus for quick hide/disable/select.Frees up dock space and reduces visual clutter while keeping every option a click away. docs.lightburnsoftware.com
Independent Design vs. Machine unitsYou can work in inches on-screen yet send mm to the controller (or vice-versa).Eliminates mental math and unit mismatches that used to bite in production. docs.lightburnsoftware.com
20-30 % snappier rendering & importEdit-window redraws and AI/DXF imports got sizable speed bumps.Large vector jobs scroll/zoom smoothly; less coffee-break time on big imports. docs.lightburnsoftware.com
OS support changeWindows 10+ / macOS 11+ only (Linux dropped). Legacy 2.0 build provided for older OSes.Plan upgrades accordingly—especially important for shop PCs still running Win 7/8. (references above)

LightBurn 2.0.01 — quick-fire UX polish

Mostly bug-squash aimed at workflow annoyances discovered post-launch:

  • High-DPI scaling fix – menus and icons now size correctly on 4K/Retina displays.
  • Node-edit drag glitch crushed – you can again reposition nodes without stray jumps.
  • Go to Origin & XTool jogging quirks – resolved; no unexpected “snap-back” motions.
  • Fire-button power, rotary enable indicator, galvo cut-settings layout – all patched.
  • Masked-image artifacts in 3D Slice mode – eliminated.
  • Clear error dialogs – you’ll get explicit messages for out-of-memory image loads or PDFs with unsupported content. LightBurn Software Forum

While 2.0.01 doesn’t add new features, it smooths rough edges that early adopters flagged, so upgrading is a no-brainer if you’re already on 2.0.
